I adopt flexible fee structures because every client and every engagement is different. Some people like hourly rates, others prefer fixed monthly or quarterly retainers and some people like success or value-driven pricing. I am interested in what works for you (not me).
I may not be the best person to meet a potential client's goals. Hence, my typical process is to meet the potential client and understand what they want, why they want it and what a successful engagement would look like. Only then might we both agree to design a model for interaction.
My professional background is an actuarial career. That led me into senior executive roles at two large financial services companies. My supplementary education, at least formally, includes a business management course, a strategic planning program and a business ethics course. I have also undertaken informal mentoring and guidance on my coaching and facilitation methods - and regular feedback from clients of course.
When I left the senior corporate executive lifestyle I was looking to share my experience and insights in ways that benefit real people rather than invisible shareholders. I was given opportunities to run workshops which led to opportunities for business coaching, leadership advice and board roles.
Primarily small business owners - 1-10 employees - who have enjoyed some success with their business but are looking to take it to a higher level of success (however they define it).
A. One-off workshop: I was invited to facilitate a full day business planning workshop for a small business that had been operating two years but wanted to grow more quickly. With a week's preparation, and input from the principal, we designed a program that resulted in the four people who attended being delighted with a concrete plan, clear responsibility for actions and realistic goals.
B. Business Advice: I have been conducting quarterly advice/coaching/planning sessions with a couple who both work in the same business. They have specific objectives but lacked a path to achieve them. They now have an agreed path and they tell me that they appreciate the accountability that I provide them which drives their progress.
Make sure that the professional understands you - not just your business.
As Steven Covey says, start with the end in mind. Be clear on what you are seeking and, more importantly, why you are seeking it. You might also think about role clarification - what is the scope/authority for the professional and what is the scope/authority for you.
