Training and studies to become a dance teacher

The dance teacher intervenes both in the school environment and with individuals. To officially work as a dance teacher, it is necessary to have a BAC L with a dance option or a BAC technologique F11 technique de la musique et de la danse with a dance option. Then, it will be necessary to follow two years of studies leading to the DE (State diploma) of dance teacher (level BAC+2) - the only diploma officially recognised for the exercise of the profession, after having prepared the EAT (technical aptitude examination). During the second year, students can choose from three specialities: classical, jazz or contemporary. Only these three disciplines are subject to a state diploma if you wish to teach them. If you wish to learn other forms of dance in order to be able to pass them on later, you can validate the DE and then follow additional training to specialise: Latin dance, hip-hop, etc. You can also continue your higher education up to BAC+5 level by preparing for the CA (certificate of aptitude) for the functions of a dance teacher, which is generally prepared at the CNSMD (national conservatory of music and dance) in Paris or Lyon

The field of intervention of a dance teacher

The dance teacher works in secondary schools as part of the CHAD (classes à horaires aménagés danse) as well as at the conservatory where he/she teaches classical dance, jazz or contemporary dance. He awakens and develops the artistic sensitivity of his students. When he offers lessons at home, his vocation is the same, but the disciplines taught are more numerous: tango, salsa, hip-hop, Zumba, etc. He can therefore specialise in several areas in order to be able to respond to all requests.

Why use a dance teacher?

When you want to hire a dance teacher, it is because you want to learn to move your body to the rhythm of the music or to overcome your shyness. It is also common for people to want to prepare for a professional dance competition or to brush up on their dance skills. Contemporary dance, classical dance and jazz courses are the most popular. Thus, it is possible to take advantage of a competitive market, which makes it possible to take advantage of low-cost courses. On the other hand, complex disciplines such as paso doble, cha-cha-cha or rumba are less taught and will require students to pay more. The qualifications of the dance teacher can also increase the price. Beginners can benefit from a rate of between €20 and €30 for a trial lesson and introduction to dance, while those who already have a certain level will have to pay more than €40 for an hour's lesson.

How to find a dance teacher?

When looking for a dance teacher, trusting your friends and family can be a good idea, but the best way is to use an online directory like StarOfService. Many teachers are available in our region or city. Just follow the instructions on the screen to get in touch with them and select the one with whom you will learn to dance like a professional.

Fees for a dance teacher

The cost of dance lessons will depend mainly on the discipline you wish to learn. Not all dances are priced the same. For example, a ballet lesson will cost around €30, while tango lessons will cost around €40 per session. For a hip-hop class, you will have to pay €30, €38 for waltz lessons and €32 if you want to learn modern dance.

How to choose a dance teacher?

The first criterion to consider when choosing a dance teacher is their approach. If you have a good feeling with him or her, it's good. If you don't have a good feeling, you should not bother. Then comes the experience which determines the skills. Otherwise, if you want to learn a particular dance, you'll have to ask the teacher what he or she specialises in, otherwise you'll just be learning the basics of several dances - which isn't bad in itself, but it's not the point.

Questions to ask a dance teacher on first contact

- How long have you worked as a dance teacher? - Do you have the qualifications as a dance teacher? - Do you have a discipline that you specialise in? - Do you offer online dance lessons? - Do you offer packages if one wishes to learn several dances?
