Reiki is an unconventional healing method of Japanese origin based on "energetic" healing through the laying on of hands. It was founded by a Japanese man named Mikao Usui who, in the late 19th century, received the "keys to healing" during a mystical revelation. Usui developed the healing method in Japan in 1922, after reportedly becoming aware of his healing abilities during a near-death experience. However, Usui died less than six years after the creation of his method, leaving behind a fairly rudimentary legacy. Although there are now several ways of approaching and presenting Reiki, its practitioners generally aim to relieve pain, provide mental calm, inner peace, and overall well-being. Reiki is rooted in the Chinese Taoist concept of chi and the Japanese Zen and martial arts concept of ki, which refers to the "life force" that circulates throughout nature, including the body, allowing it to function and connecting all beings. Some practitioners associate Reiki with the activation of the seven chakras, which is a conception derived from the Indian tantric and traditional yoga systems. This system of India is known in Japan through the Buddhist system, which is based on five subtle centers corresponding to the five elements, and Shinto/Taoism, such as acupuncture and shiatsu, which are based on a system of three subtle centers. There are some similarities with the meridians of traditional Chinese medicine. The system of progression in Reiki is also inspired by Japanese Shintoism, of which it partially adopts the initiation system, called "reikiki" or "reiki-kanjō" in traditional Shintoism. The symbol used by the master to confer initiation (dai-komyo) refers to the Shingon mantra, Komyo ("bright light"), related to the Buddhist doctrine of fundamental clear light, represented in this tradition by a mandala in which the Buddha Vairocana is surrounded by the colors of the rainbow with, on the periphery, 23 white moons comprising Sanskrit letters. The main symbols of Reiki transmitted in the teachings of the second and third degrees are the Cho Ku Rei, Sei He Ki, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, and Dai Ko Myo. They are traced or visualized during the Reiki session. In practice, the laying on of hands is supposed to transmit "energy," that is, "a force in motion." The scientific community studies the effectiveness of Reiki and generally considers it to be a pseudoscience with inconclusive effectiveness, with the alleged positive effects resulting from the placebo effect.

What training or studies are required to teach Reiki?

It should be known that there is virtually no training or regulation for practitioners in the field of reiki, and this actually poses some problems, namely, this discipline is not supervised by any authority. From there, anyone can proclaim themselves a reiki practitioner without any training, since according to the ROME sheet from Pôle Emploi, the activity is accessible without any particular diploma. It is good to know that some private institutes do offer training, however, note that their diploma has no institutional value. Thus, it is possible to become a reiki master in three or four accelerated training courses during weekends. However, be careful, as this ease of promotion is part of the sectarian strategy of many movements of this technique, according to Miviludes (https://www.miviludes.interieur.gouv.fr/). Miviludes is the Interministerial Mission for Monitoring and Combating Cultic Deviances, an organization of the French state created in 2002. It replaced MILS (Interministerial Mission for Combating Cultic Deviances). Miviludes' mission is to observe and analyze the phenomenon of cultic deviances, inform the public about the risks they represent, and coordinate the preventive and repressive action of public authorities. In search of respectability, the reiki nebula has invented an institutional environment with federations intended to make people forget that these practices are not recognized by health authorities and that they operate outside any legal framework. They publish charters or codes of ethics, which, however, are not binding, as there is no professional order recognized by the State.

What is the scope of work of a Reiki practitioner's guard?

In general, Reiki is considered to be a gentle and energizing technique that is suitable for everyone and allows for a general improvement in health, both physically, psychologically and emotionally. We will see more details about Reiki later, but it is primarily focused on self-healing, meaning it aims to put the subject in the best conditions to recover as quickly as possible. Its use is recognized for all kinds of pathologies, from milder ones (such as stress, headaches, anxiety, etc.) to more severe ones, such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease, but it should be emphasized that it does not claim to treat them. It should also be noted that this type of energy healing can also be sent to domestic animals. This can be done in various significant events in the animal's life, such as adoption and arrival in a new habitat, family relocation, the arrival of another animal or a baby in the house, or a strong feeling of loneliness if the animal is left alone at home for long periods repeatedly. However, it is essential to note that Reiki cannot and should not replace a veterinary consultation; it can only complement and strengthen a hypothetical treatment.

Why hire a professional reiki teacher?

The practitioner, or Reiki master, channels the energy of the universe and transmits it by placing their hands on different parts of the client's body, using esoteric symbols and sacred sounds. Through their practice and the various trainings they have received, the Reiki master possesses a wealth of knowledge that is both highly codified and dense. It can involve sequences of movements that look like carefully choreographed routines, precise hand placements on the body or the use of Chinese energy symbols, which require the mastery of nuanced codes. Furthermore, at the beginning of the first session, there is an interview that requires a certain level of experience. During this interview, a good professional will ask the right questions to learn about the client's habits, living conditions, family and work environments, health issues, and so on. In light of all these elements, it is clear that it is safer to seek the services of a qualified, trained and experienced Reiki master, who has made Reiki their profession, in order to ensure that one receives the most appropriate courses and sessions.

When to use Reiki sessions?

Reiki is not a medical treatment and is not intended to cure; this energy therapy only allows for revitalization and relaxation. In this way, Reiki sessions allow individuals to receive positive energy and puts them in a state of self-healing. The time of the treatment is conducive to meditation, relaxation, and letting go. The practitioner then helps to liberate the mind often clouded with anxiety, stress, or even past traumas. The practice of Reiki helps to fluidize energy, and therefore, it also has a positive impact on the questions or doubts that can overwhelm the patient. Once the treatment session has ended, the practitioner is able to give valuable advice regarding what they felt and hypothetical blocks that may have been identified. This moment of exchange is essential, just like the brief interview at the beginning of the session, as it provides new keys to understanding and facilitates self-healing. It is important to understand that Reiki does not have the same effect on everyone, although one of the first benefits felt by most practitioners is a certain sense of peace of mind. If we have mentioned that Reiki does not substitute medical practices, it should be noted that it can still help alleviate physical pain and, through the self-healing it induces, facilitate the natural recovery of the body. Reiki can also be beneficial in the context of severe illnesses, as the care provided can be very helpful in the healing or accompanying process of a sick individual. This is why, in several countries, practitioners can intervene in hospitals, not to treat these illnesses, but to allow patients to be more relaxed, have better morale, and thus have better chances of healing. This applies to certain cancers and diseases such as Alzheimer's, for example...

How to find Reiki courses?

Finding reiki courses is easier today than it was 10 years ago, that's for sure. Nevertheless, this discipline is not yet as widespread as yoga or other similar practices, so it may not be possible to find public sessions in smaller towns. The best way is to start by asking around among your friends and acquaintances, although it has to be acknowledged that word of mouth may not be the most effective way to find the right teacher for this somewhat rare and hard-to-find activity. If you live in a remote region, in the middle of the countryside, for example, and cannot find any courses or teachers nearby, don't let that stop you. There are professionals who travel and others who may be interested in introducing you to their art. If word of mouth doesn't yield any results, which is quite possible, then it is recommended to turn to the Internet, and consult a site such as StarOfService, for example, which lists all the professionals in a given field, depending on the location of your search. With just a few clicks, the site will give you the contact details of the professional, and you can contact them right away. This also applies to reiki teachers.

How much do Reiki sessions cost?

Before giving you any specific rates or price ranges, we would like to emphasize that your geographical location can have a relatively significant impact on the prices charged. Therefore, please understand that the price range we are about to give you is necessarily somewhat broad. With that said, one can consider that a Reiki session costs between 60 and 100 euros, depending on the duration and experience of the practitioner. Although it is possible, as the customer is king after all, to choose to have only one session to try it out, it is advisable to opt for a series of at least 3 or 4 sessions, so that the practitioner can truly have the time to work on your profile. Most professionals therefore offer prices that include 3, 4, or even 6 or 8 sessions for this purpose, and the price is higher, although each session costs a little less.

How to choose the right Reiki teacher?

We have already mentioned earlier in this content that while word of mouth is undoubtedly one of the best ways to find a craftsman or a company in many sectors, this is not necessarily the case when it comes to finding reiki courses, which are not very common in France, although the activity is developing. Nevertheless, word of mouth costs nothing, so start there anyway, you never know! Talk to your friends, family and acquaintances, as it is entirely possible that someone among them has heard of an address that offers excellent services, close to your home, whether it is a structure that offers the activity on site, in its structure, or whether it is a reiki master who offers to come to your home or locality. If word of mouth does not produce the desired results, then take a look on the Internet and check out some professional referencing sites, such as StarOfService for example. You will find lists of professionals who work in your region, as well as reviews and comments from customers who have used their services. We want to emphasize this last point, which is crucial to us, and we invite you to really take the time to consult these reviews and comments, which really shed light on the quality of the work of the professional concerned. Remember that it is a hundred times better to spend a little time carefully reviewing the reviews and comments, rather than choosing your reiki teacher by chance, for a final service that will prove to be disappointing. Once you have found the rare gem, make sure to check their availability, make sure the rates correspond to what you have planned or are willing to pay, and clearly state the dates and availability you would like to see met, etc. One last tip: be very careful of professionals who tend to offer prices well below market rates. Know that most of the time, far from being a good deal, this discount price is not a guarantee of top quality services. A smart customer is worth two...
