Training and studies to become a thermal installer
The trade of thermal fitter is accessible from several levels of study, the minimum of which is the CAP thermal fitter prepared after secondary school in 2 years in an apprentice training centre (CFA) or in a vocational school. It can be completed by a complementary mention (MC) maintenance in individual thermal equipment. Other level V diplomas allow you to work as a heating engineer, such as the BEP in refrigeration and air-conditioning techniques or in sanitary and thermal installation techniques. Insofar as these two BEPs are more or less the same, it is possible to prepare them at the same time and thus have a double specialisation as a heating installer. At level IV, it is possible to take a BAC pro in energy or a BP in refrigeration and air-conditioning or in air-conditioning installation. And if you wish to pursue higher education, there is the BMS building and the BTS fluids-energies-environments.
The scope of intervention of a thermal installer
The thermal installer, whose most common name is heating engineer, has many tasks. This specialist in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems aims to bring well-being to the occupants of a home, but also in other buildings: commercial premises, offices, shops, etc. He installs heaters, radiators, boilers, air conditioning and various other devices producing heat, cold or hot water. He carries out the layout and lays the pipes and ducts required for connection. When he has completed the installation, he checks its integrity before putting the appliances into service. His tasks do not end with the installation of heating equipment, as he also carries out repairs and maintenance. He can also offer a maintenance contract at the time of installation.
Why use a thermal installer?
A heating engineer is called in to help us adjust the temperature in our home sweet home. This way, whether in summer or winter, we will always be comfortable with the right temperature. But the heating engineer can also help us to have domestic hot water by coupling the heating appliance with a suitable emitter; this means that we are no longer dependent on a separate water heater. This can save us money on the electricity bill.
How to find a thermal installer?
Finding a thermal installer becomes easy when you turn to an online directory like StarOfService. Just follow the directions on the screen and you will come across many tradesmen in your area or city and select the one to work with.
Rates of a thermal installer
The heating engineer charges an hourly rate that varies according to many criteria: geographical area, hours of operation. The fees of this craftsman are between 35 € and 60 € (excluding VAT) and between 45 € and 80 € for non-working days (weekends and public holidays). Prices can increase by 30% to 50% for work in urban areas and up to 70% in the Paris region. Depending on the type of intervention, here are some prices (installation and travel included): - Installation of a heating system: €500 to €2,000 for an electric boiler, €800 to €2,000 for an oil or gas boiler, €1,000 to €3,000 for a wood boiler, €750 to €2,500 for a heat pump, €50 to €80 for a radiator, €1,500 to €3,000 for underfloor heating; - Domestic hot water production: €250 to €400 for an electric water heater, €500 to €1,000 for a thermodynamic tank, €3,000 to €6,000 for solar panels; - Ventilation system: €500 to €1,000 for a single flow CMV and €2,500 to €4,000 for a double flow CMV; - Maintenance: €75 to €250 for maintenance of gas, wood or oil-fired boilers. It is possible to benefit from financing and aid for heating work provided that it is carried out by a heating engineer with the RGE label (recognised as an environmental guarantor): energy bonus, 5.5% VAT, Eco-PTZ (zero rate loan), 30% tax credit for energy saving work, national aid from the Anah (national housing agency) or aid from local authorities.
How to choose a thermal installer?
The first selection criterion in choosing a heating installer is his qualification. Indeed, if he has the RGE label, he can benefit from aid for heating installation work. Next, you need to look at their experience and references. Don't forget to ask about their location to avoid excessive travel costs.
